My top 10 hamburgers in San Francisco

See also this list of cloth napkin burgers.

  1. Bix
  2. Mission Beach Cafe
  3. Marlowe
  4. Slow Club
  5. Orson
  6. Magnolia
  7. Mos Grille
  8. Custom Burger
  9. Bistro Burger
  10. In-n-Out

As a bonus, the most overrated burgers:

  1. The Burger Bar in Macys—the Las Vegas one was OK, but the SF one is a wreck, far worse than even a McDonalds, with inedibly gristly meat the one and last time I had the misfortune to go.
  2. Zuni Cafe—the shoestring fries are lovely, but the burger itself blah
  3. Joes Cable Car—OK, but nothing to write home about

The burger bar in Vegas is quite disappointing, though most of the restaurants in Vegas are disappointing (apart from the Bouchon for brunch/breakfast).
My burger references are more in NYC: Big Nick’s in UWS and Island Burgers and Shakes in midtown.
In Texas I like the ‘Jack in the Box’ chain, which is much better than the in and out in my opinion, and then, there is fiveguys around DC…

Actually the good premium chains are nearly as good as the independent burger joints…

They have Jack in the Box here in SF, but it is nowhere near the same leagues as In-n-Out, Johnny Rockets or even Carl’s Jr.

I tried the in-n-out in Vegas, and was kinda unimpressed… The Angus burger at the Jack in the Box is second to none…

Oh yeah, and as far as ribs are concerned, I don’t know anything better than the Rib Hut in El Paso, TX…
